Charge Your Car is planning to launch Britain's biggest pay-as-you-go, 'open source' system of publicly accessible charging points for electric vehicles (EVs).

The firm will be presenting the plans at the LCV2012 Conference and Technical Seminar Programme from September 5-6 at Millbrook Proving Grounds, Bedfordshire.

Charge Your Car is the UK's first network available for all EV motorists and fleets, all charge point hosts and network operators, and every charge station provider.

The firm is confident that the use of 'open source' for the development and management of countrywide recharging systems will help increase the mass use of EVs.

Operations manager at Charge Your Car, Alexandra Prescott, said: "The UK has multiple regional networks of charge points in closed membership schemes, which is delaying the adoption of electric vehicles in the UK.

"EV users cannot 'roam'; they need to join multiple membership schemes, pay multiple subscriptions, and use multiple means of accessing the charge points. All of this creates hassle and imposes unnecessary expense.

"Most EV drivers charge at home overnight, so the public network is for topping up and extended-range journeys. We know from research that EV drivers want to be able to access charging infrastructure in the same way as they buy petrol or park their car: pay-as-you-go, without joining membership schemes or paying a monthly subscription."
